The Sonic
Forest is an inspiring audio and light installation that is controlled
by Apple hardware. It encourages people to interact with their environment and each other, and creates beautiful, open-score
music in the process. The ultimate goal of the sonic forest is to make public space
sonically beautiful, and music entirely physical and interactive.
In short, it is a
collection of 16 eight-foot by 10-inch hollow columns, each containing audio speakers, photo sensors, and light sensors. Furthermore, each “forest”
is equiped with a weather station. The weather station allows for the installation
to interact with its enviorment before any participants enter into it. Judging
wind conditions, temperature, percipitation and other factors, the “forest” changes the way it coaxes passers
by into it. For example, if its
raining, it will emit frog noises and swamp sounds. If it is windy, it sends
off mooo’s and tornado sounds. The whole idea behind the piece is to get
people curious and enter inside its enviorment.
The artist refers
to each “electonic tree” as an intrument. In turn, the people that
walk past or choose to step inside are the musicians. Participants triger
a gigantic array of sounds, effects, melodies. The soundscapes are grand, vast
and come at you from all sides. Everything from rain forests, underwater enviornments,
and concerts halls come together to form an inspiring multy sensory experience.
